The terms "Gentlemen and Ladies" are used by teachers who want to clearly communicate an underlying statement about the essence of partnership dancing. Please take a look at the Etiquette tab found at BallroomDancers.com.
The gentleman guides the lady by subtle body movements originating from his center of mass, legs, arms and head, generally in that order. The lady follows by centering on his chest and matching his shoulder angle (unless led to a different dance position such as a promenade or turns). She does this by feeling the directional movement indicated by his legs and by attending to visual clues.
